So many mobile photos are rubbish.

Why?

Mobile phone cameras today are brilliant.

Some have four lenses.

Some have a megapixel count higher than top-end DSLR cameras.

Why then are so many cell phone images so uninspiring?

What is composition

The way in which your subject is put together or arranged makes a huge difference in your photography.

The composition of an image consists of different elements.

It's up to you, the artist, to arrange these elements to create a captivating image.

Think of the great music composers. Same thing, except here you are the composer of a great photograph.

Rule of thirds and the use of lines are two composition elements

Are you a "check my location" photographer?

It's a beautiful scene. A crisp spring morning.  Blue skies, colourful fishing boats and fluffy white clouds.

You grab your phone to get the photos.

You point it at the scene and snap.

Immediately you post it to all your social media accounts.

Included in the photo are railway lines, overhead wires, cars, a car park...

The boats and calm water somewhere in the distance.

Is this how you take a photo? Do you often see images like this? See all the clutter?

All you have done is show your thousands of followers your location in relation to the scene – "Look, I'm in Kalk Bay."

You can do so much better.

You can create beautiful, clear, punchy photos.
